For the Month of July, our Charity Spotlight is The Mountain Lion BackPack Program. This organization equips students to be physically and mentally prepared to learn, and they proactively support an average of 1,000 Altoona Area Elementary school children every weekend during the school year.
The MLBP is funded entirely by local individuals and businesses, and receive no additional state or federal government funding.
To achieve their goal of feeding the 1200-1500 children with need in our district, their annual budget is approximately $120,000. And for more than seven years, Blair County community members have faithfully pulled together to support them.
One significant source of their funding comes from hosting special events like their upcoming Wheels for Meals Car, Motorcycle, and Truck Show.
Proceeds from Wheels for Meals will benefit the Mountain Lion BackPack Program for purchasing food to provide to AASD elementary students in need over the weekends during the 2019-2020 school year.
If you attend the event, register a vehicle to be in the event, or become a vendor at the event, you can help area kids succeed in school because they won’t be distracted by hunger.
If you would like to contribute but will be unable to attend the Wheels for Meals event, you can also make a donation online. It doesn’t take much to have a big impact. Approximately $3 is all that is needed to feed one student for one weekend. It only takes around $100 to feed a child throughout the entire school year.
