The Door Spotlight

In 1925, Alto-Reste Park was built with a focus on honoring life and helping families through difficult times.

That’s still our goal today. So we’re partnering with The Door in Bellwood to bring attention to the important work they do. The Door is a non-profit organization that addresses teenagers’ needs for food, family, and faith.

The National Center for Addictions and Substance Abuse at Columbia University determined that the kids who turn out best have two things in common.

1. They belong to a faith group like a church or youth ministry.
2. They have family dinner 3 or more nights a week.

The Door’s ministry is centered on the daily family dinner. So any teenager who would like to may join their “family” for dinner. Some kids have genuine needs to be fed, others have a need to not eat alone and to feel part of a family.

Since 2002, The Door has served dinner to 20-40 teens every weekday. All of these meals are “off budget” with nearly 100% of supplies donated to feed the kids. So far, they have served over 95,000 meals from a pantry that is stocked by gifts of food from caring people in the community.

The Door provides for any teen in need completely free of charge. Continuing to offering this program for free requires a strong base of community support.

We would encourage you to take a few moments to learn more about this incredibly generous and worthwhile organization:
