The Garden of the Sermon on the Mount has a magnificent marble statue of Jesus in the center and offers many small gardens throughout for your comfort. This garden contains many steps for a specific reason.

The theme is Spiritual Mountain Climbing and is listed in Matthew 5 verses 3 through 12 listed below. Jesus unfolds the eight progressive steps by which men reach the higher altitudes of spiritual life.

The initial step Humility – a conscious need
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Mt. 5:3

Second step Penitence – a mourning for sin
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted Mt. 5:4

Third step Meekness – marking the birth of a New Spirit
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth Mt. 5:5

Fourth step Spiritual Hunger – signifying Growth
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled Mt. 5:6

Fifth step Mercifulness – an attribute of God, indicating further Advance
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy Mt. 5:7

Sixth step Heart Purity – marking the attainment of higher attitudes, where comes the the vision of God
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God Mt 5:8

Seventh step Peacemaking – a Christlike Influence, calming the Storms of Life
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God Mt. 5:9

Eighth step Sacrificial Suffering – standing beside the prophets and martyrs
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven Mt. 5:10
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me Mt. 5:11

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you Mt. 5:12

This teaching then expands into Matthew chapters 6 and 7 to guide us further. Life therefore begins and unfolds as a journey of progressive steps of his matchless doctrinal principles leading us to the fundamental truths of the kingdom of God.
